Sunday night listening- Adele ‘Lovesong’
Normally, I hate covers. Just leave them be if the song is already good, don’t ruin it and embarrass yourself by creating a mundane copy. However, this song is different. When I first got Adeles’ 2nd album, ‘21’, I was intrigued by ‘Lovesong’, as it sounded so familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on why. Then I realised that it is of course a cover of The Cures’ version, and dare I say it, but I prefer Adeles’! What’s a bit of controversy between friends?
It has a Spanish feel to it due to the acoustic guitar, and it’s been stripped down so much that it’s so simple and easy to listen to. Adele deals with the song in the right way, putting all her emotion into it, singing the beautiful lyrics penned by The Cure in such a way that you feel that she is pouring her heart out. If I saw her perform this live I probably would cry like the massive girl that I am. Everybody loves a love song, and this is one of the best.

Adele- ‘Rolling in the Deep’
The girl born in the wrong era is back. With a pair of lungs to put even Florence to shame, Adele is releasing ‘Rolling in the Deep’ next month, with her second album ‘21’ due out February next year. Naming her albums after her age at the time, it’s safe to say that she’s a role model for those her age (myself included), because we grow up with her. Her new stuff is fierce; it’s big, bold and bluesy. The backing vocals to this track are haunting and the piano is pushing the song to the next level, similar to recent Aloe Blacc hit ‘I Need a Dollar’. As a revenge song that was ‘written in an hour due to being so angry’, Adele is singing with her soul. Adele hasn’t let us forget her, and if you thought her debut stuff was something, her new material packs a punch even more.
Favourite lyric: ‘You held my heart and soul in your hand, and you played it to the beat’.
