Letting The Music Do The Talking

I don't know why I want to voice this out loud, it's therapeutic somehow.

The Wave Pictures- I Love You Like A Madman

The Wave Pictures are a band that I’ve embarrassingly only just got into. But boy have I made up for it. They’ve already got 10 albums under their belt, but it was only last week that I picked up their 7th album in a record store in Camden. ‘Instant Coffee Baby’ is an album in which you wouldn’t turn a song over, it’s so enjoyable that you’ll end up playing it on repeat all day, for the next 5 days.

At first, singer David Tattersall’s voice was hard to grasp due to its distinction, however I got the pleasure to see the band last night at Spanky van Dykes’ in Nottingham. To say it was the best gig that I’d seen in a while wouldn’t be a lie. You can tell that The Wave Pictures have been playing together for years, having formed in 1998, they were so tight as a band. As a three piece, they made music for the crowd to dance to, to sing along to, and to just stand there in amazement and be in awe of.

Tattersall’s voice immediately won me over, note perfect and singing the clever and poetic lyrics in a story-like form. His guitar playing showed such a talent that I didn’t know whether to dance to the catchy riffs or stand there with my mouth wide open as he jammed. Big praise also to the bassist and drummer, who played with such energy but somehow still made it seem so effortless.

This band don’t look like a band, they don’t act like one, but they certainly show up some of the new bands out at the moment who write one ‘good’ song and then fall off the radar- they sound so original, and deserve all the praise they can get. It’s been 12 years since they started, let’s hope that they get their big break soon.
